Patty Melts (with special sauce)
My guy and I love our rare “stay at home” dates. We ship all our kids off to an activity, make ourselves a tasty dinner and snuggle on the couch with a movie.
This hearty, savory sandwich is one of his favorites.
Seasoned lean ground beef patties, thinly sliced sauteed peppers and onions, tangy provolone cheese all tucked between two slices of soft homemade or store bought French bread slathered with a special sauce. Butter the outsides with butter, toast the whole thing in the oven for a few minutes, pop on a plate and dinner is served!
Patty Melts
Ingredients:
2 lbs lean ground beef
1 Tblsp Montreal Steak Seasoning
1 Tblsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp garlic salt
1 package sliced provolone cheese (8 oz)
2 Tblsp butter
2 Tblsp olive oil
2 green bell peppers, thinly sliced
2 red bell peppers, thinly sliced
2 red onions, thinly sliced
*Special Sauce
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup A-1 steak sauce
Two loaves French bread, sandwich sliced
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened
Directions:
Preheat oven to 450F.
In a mixing bowl, combine all patty ingredients, mixing well to ensure even distribution of seasonings throughout ground beef.
Shape into rectangular patties and set aside.
In a large skillet over high heat, melt butter and olive oil. Add onions and peppers and saute until onions are soft and peppers are crisp tender. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet over high heat, fry each patty for approximately 2 minutes per side, or just until brown, being careful not to crowd patties together. Remove from skillet and set aside.
Thinly spread butter on one side of each slice of French bread and lay butter side down on cookie sheet.
In a small bowl, mix special sauce ingredients together until well combined. Thinly spread sauce on exposed side of bread slices, mixing together additional special sauce if necessary.
Breaking each provolone cheese slice in half, lay one half on each slice of bread and place baking sheet in oven. Toast just until cheese is melted.
Remove baking sheet from oven and lay a patty on half of the bread slices. Top with peppers and remaining half of bread and place back in the oven. Toast until bread is golden brown on top.
Remove from oven, slice sandwiches in half and serve!
